IF+D = Notepads + Enron + Funny Conversation

We have an awesome shop here in Austin called IF+D (Innovation, Flooring and Design), and I just had to write a little blog about them because I love them. Their owner’s name is Kristen and she is truly hilarious. She is one of those people that you walk in and immediately feel like you have known her for years - and then she makes you burst out laughing with her fantastically blunt and sarcastic humor. Its just great. And to my recent surprise, it doesn’t end there…

I went online to get their phone number (I recently ordered something from them) and burst out laughing when I read the homepage - here’s a glimpse:

Enron Notepad

If you are at all like us, you spend your time manipulating the energy market in California and moving large sums of cash through a complex maze of shell companies and offshore bank accounts. It’s so confusing that even our accountants get messed up. But don’t worry any longer: for a limited time only, IF+D is pleased to present actual Enron memo pads to help you keep your to-do lists (both legal and illegal) organized.

And we should note that, with what can only be described as a giant freaking explosion of irony, the tagline across the bottom reads “Respect | Integrity | Communication | Excellence”. price: $3.00, or whatever the market will bear.

The rest of the site is just like this. So random and hilarious. Plus they have Really awesome stuff from Blue Dot…So I called them to check on my order and she says:

“oh yeah, we’re supposed to get those in, like tomorrow, I ordered one and then they were out and now they say its on its way, so I should be calling you tomorrow”

“That’s cool I’m not in a huge hurry, whenever”

“You’re not like freaking out on me or anything are you? You’re not one of those customers?”

“No, no, I’m not freaking out or anything - call me whenever - I’ll talk to you when I talk to you”

“Ok cool, bye”

“Bye”

Hahaha. She cracks me up. I should say that we found out last time I was in the store that we have a mutual friend, so I’m sure she isn’t this cool to everyone - you might want to run in there and make friends right away so you too can laugh on your lunch break.

I love people who are unapologetically themselves.

They have a blog too.

Omg. and I just saw that their email link reads “spamtrap@ifdaustin.com”. P-e-r-s-o-n-a-l-i-t-y. Ha.

My recommendation letter: Bob Fee for IDSA educator’s award

When I was a freshman in Industrial Design at the Savannah College of Art and Design, I met Mr. Bob Fee and quickly realized that you don’t meet Bob Fee, you experience him. His presence is energetic, inspiring, and most important of all: playful. As I got to know him throughout the years I realized that this experience was one that kept growing and changing – not because Bob was constantly changing, but because he was slowly but surely teaching me a new language.

In the four years of my education at SCAD, I had nothing short of hundreds of experiences with Mr. Fee that I feel each exemplify all of the reasons why he should formally win an award as an educator, but I’m going to tell you a few stories that mattered the most to me.

Whistle while you work: Bob Fee as a teacher
I’ve never asked Bob what his method to teaching may be, but if I were to define it based on my experiences I would say that he is a storyteller.

You might hear from many students that their first discussions/classes with Bob left them confused – and this is true. I have one memory of a class with Bob when I asked him what I thought was a very straightforward question with a simple answer, but instead I got a story. He often answered our questions with stories and started discussions with stream of consciousness style questioning – and although this was confusing at first, I am still impacted by those discussions. I would leave those classes confused and day after day as I was working, little bits would sink in and I would audibly say “ah-ha, that’s what he was talking about!” His true creativity was expressed in this style of teaching – he was teaching us his language, and not only did this teach us to think differently, it taught us to listen differently.

Surrendering to Algorithms

Whoa. I’m fascinated, creeped out, and on board - all at the same time. I would write more, but I’m working and I’ve got stuff to do! Enjoy:

Twenty years ago, Wozniak realized that computers could easily calculate the moment of forgetting if he could discover the right algorithm. SuperMemo is the result of his research. It predicts the future state of a person’s memory and schedules information reviews at the optimal time. The effect is striking. Users can seal huge quantities of vocabulary into their brains. But for Wozniak, 46, helping people learn a foreign language fast is just the tiniest part of his goal. As we plan the days, weeks, even years of our lives, he would have us rely not merely on our traditional sources of self-knowledge — introspection, intuition, and conscious thought — but also on something new: predictions about ourselves encoded in machines.

Mousecheif

The folks at Microsoft are coming up with some great teaching tools for the classroom. In Thailand, they are trying out a new tool that allows multiple students interact with a screen via multiple mice. The teachers can design their own lessons by creating interactive power point slides that respond to the multiple mouse clicks.

MouseMischief.org is dedicated to exploring, understanding, and experimenting with the Mischief research project. Mischief is a research project whose premise is giving each student in a classroom a mouse. It aims to provide scalable, sustainable, and affordable classroom technology to schools in developing regions.

The students show excitement and energy with the ability to interact together and learn as a group with this new technology.  I can imagine that the newness of the tool keeps them engaged as well as the “cool” factor of getting to interact with a giant screen that is projected onto the wall.
