Arnel meet Journey, Journey meet Arnel

Journey found their new lead singer by searching you tube! Honestly I don’t care who is singing Journey - I will listen and sway and belt it out as loud as my lungs will allow. That being said, the new guy is pretty darn good.

Oh Journey, you stand by me, I’m forever yours, faithfully.

Creativity is Courage

John Maeda on “Why being creative is good“:

…While watching my daughter’s viola lesson, and as she stood in front of the class, I realized that the moment when the bow touched the strings was not something to be taken for granted. It was the moment when she was to begin the process of expressing herself by creating music. To create is to potentially embarrass oneself in front of others. It is about the courage to be oneself and to be seen as oneself. Putting ink to a page, or pressing one’s fingers against clay, or typing a line of computer code, or blowing glass and realizing mistake. Or success. With everyone watching. But most importantly, you.

So it dawned upon me how important it is to be a creative. Because it means you have within you infinite capacity to experiment. You are unafraid to go somewhere new because you are creating a new thought process about your own creativity. You know that if you stop and no longer challenge yourself, you cease to be creative. You become still, silent, and the bow no longer connect with the strings and music is not made. And you do not exist. You show you do not have the courage to exist.

The Monty Hall Paradox

In another life I will be a mathematician and spend my days figuring stuff like this out. I will probably join a team and participate in MIT’s Mystery Hunt and have a brain full of random knowledge ranging from subjects such as the animal kingdom, to computer science. I will be unfashionable and I might even carry an umbrella when its sunny outside, but it will only add to my intellectual intrigue. I will write books that only my mathematician friends will read and I will be satisfied with my life’s accomplishments of solving puzzles because, well, thats what I was born to do. Yes this will all happen. Maybe.

I’ve been a closet fan of game shows for years; most likely because I love the idea of getting something for nothing (hey, this is a frugal writer after all). I recently stumbled across something called “The Monty Hall Paradox” and it’s opened my eyes to the laws of probability in the seemingly innocent world of game shows. And armed with this knowledge, you’ve got a much better chance of winning something….read more at Wise Bread.

In other quiz show news, I listened to a great little story on “This American Life” last week appropriately titled “Quiz Show“.( Yes, this is where I learned about MIT’s Mystery Hunt, and yes, I think its fabulous)

Quiz Show:

“A man with social anxiety goes through a transformation on a TV game show, a young woman with high ideals has them dashed by a TV game show, and teams compete to solve some of the hardest puzzles in the world, for fun. The secret life of quiz shows, the life behind the questions and answers.

Stunning Staircase

Levitate Architects

This is a book/staircase design by Levitate Architects inspired by a London renter’s book collection. This is truly a stunning design, one I would definitely incorporate into my dream house. via Core77 and Apartment Therapy

The Passing of Time

Field

When my eyes found this photo something happened. I stopped, looked at the image, and waited while the sense of pure perfection ran over me. The subject’s pose is so still and balanced, it makes the horizontal line across the middle feel perfectly comfortable and necessary; yet this is not what grips me. It is the fact that this man put his hat on, stood perfectly still, and chose to take this very picture. He is proud of what his labor has afforded him and is respectful of the ground it came from, celebrating the growth of this crop; the food, the abundance, and the harmony with the soil. I love that this kind of peaceful satisfaction can be captured.
